CBP: Houston woman tried to smuggle $200K in meth

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers say they seized $200,000 in methamphetamine at the Veterans In-ternational Bridge.

According to a CBP news release, a 42-year-old Houston woman drove across the bridge Thursday and was sent for a secondary inspection.

Officers say they found 44 packages of methamphetamine hidden in her car, a Nissan. The narcotics totaled more than 13 pounds and have an estimated street value of $197,700, the CBP stated.

The woman was turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement-Homeland Security Investigations (ICE-HSI) for further investigation.

Drugs found in ceramic animals

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers detained two men early Thursday morning who officials say attempted to smuggle more than 100 pounds of marijuana in two ceramic animal statues.

Brownsville Police spokesman J.J. Trevino said CBP turned Macario Cardenas Boyso, 22, and Emanuel Trejo, 20, over to Brownsville police, who arrested the men on possession charges.

Officers found about 112 pounds of marijuana hidden in two ceramic statues, one of a lion and one of a snail, Trevino said. Boyso and Trejo were stopped while trying to enter the country around 2 a.m. at the B&M International Bridge, Trevino said.

Bail was set at $25,000 for each suspect.

En botellas de corona?

McALLEN — Jurors convicted an Illinois woman Wednesday after she was caught with more than 15 pounds of methamphetamine hidden inside beer bottles.

Carolina Avila, 20, was found guilty by jurors after about 2½ hours of deliberation in U.S. District Court in McAllen. She was found guilty on four counts of importation and possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection found the methamphetamine mixed in a case of full Corona beer bottles as she attempted to enter the U.S. on March 19, 2011, at the Hidalgo-Reynosa International Bridge.

Avila told officers she was going to visit relatives in Mission and had traveled to the area from Rochelle, Ill.

She told U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents that she didn't know the drugs were concealed in the beer bottles, but she later said her father asked her to bring into the country the beer with an illegal substance inside. She told agents she knew her father had a history of drug trafficking.

The methamphetamine carried an estimated local street value of at least $225,000.

Avila faces between 10 years and life in federal prison without parole and a $10 million fine on each of the four counts.

Avila had been free on bond prior to her trial but will remain in custody until a sentencing hearing set for March 20.
