Key Points
Russian Helicopters to undertake hot-weather testing of Ka-226T in Iran.
Tests come as Russia and Iran are working together on potential helicopter programmes and UAV development.
Russian Helicopters announced on 9 August that it was to begin usability testing of the Kamov Ka-226T ‘Hoodlum-C’ in Iran.

The testing programme will evaluate the platform’s performance in ambient temperatures of up to 50°C.

Testing will be undertaken between Russian Helicopters and the Iran Helicopters Support and Renewal Company (IHSRC) throughout August.

The Ka-226T is a light utility twin-engined helicopter with co-axial rotors. According to Jane’s All the World’s Aircraft , it is powered by two Turbomeca Arrius 2G1 turboshaft engines and has a maximum take-off weight of 3,600 kg (7,937 lb). The helicopter has a service ceiling of 7,000 m (22,960 ft), and a maximum level flight speed of 135 kt (250 km/h). An interchangeable mission pod, located behind the flight deck, can be used to accommodate troops, cargo, or transport patients in a medevac configuration.

In May 2015, India’s Defence Acquisition Council approved the in principle purchase of 197 Ka-226Ts for the country’s military. Sixty helicopters are to be manufactured in Russia, with the remaining platforms to be assembled in India through a joint venture with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited. Service and support is to be undertaken in India.

The move is the latest in a number of increased links between the Russian and Iranian defence industries, with Russian Helicopters and Iran's Industrial Development & Renovation Organization (IDRO) signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in April to investigate the potential assembly of Mil Mi-8 ‘Hip’ helicopters in Iran.
