The picture shows the scene of the “Komodo” multilateral humanitarian rescue and disaster-relief exercise held in the waters off the Batam Island of Indonesia on March 31, 2014.
BATAM ISLAND, April 1 (ChinaMil) -- 24 warships from 17 countries participating in the “Komodo” multilateral humanitarian rescue and disaster-relief exercise hosted by the Indonesian Navy weighed anchors around 07:00, local time, on March 31, 2014 from their respective anchorages to form 4 specially-mixed taskforces to assemble in the maritime area designated by the joint exercise and kick off the maritime humanitarian rescue and disaster-relief actual-troop exercise.

The exercise was conducted under the background that a tsunami which occurred in a maritime area caused the wreck of a passing vessel, the crewmen falling overboard, the damage to a maritime oil drilling platform, as well as the heavy casualties of a country so that an emergency rescue was needed.

The warships from various countries arrived at the designated maritime area in the afternoon and kicked off the rescue and disaster-relief operation immediately. All the warships and aircraft from the participating countries were divided into 4 force groups: the Anambas group, the maritime platform group, the Natuna group and the aerial support group.

The major task of the aerial support group, which is composed of 3 fixed-wing aircraft from Indonesia and a P-3C aircraft from the U.S., was to fly to the disaster-stricken area to conduct a comprehensive evaluation on the disaster.

The maritime platform group composed of 10 warships and 2 helicopters from the U.S., India, Brunei, Singapore and other countries took charge of the emergency repairs on the maritime oil-drilling platform in order to prevent the oil contamination from spreading.

The Anambas group composed of 4 warships and 3 helicopters from China, Indonesia, Malaysia and other countries was mainly responsible for the search and rescue of the crewmen fallen into water.

The primary duty for the Natuna group composed of 10 warships and 5 helicopters from Russia, Australia, Japan and other countries was to provide assistance for the disaster-stricken country.

The 4 warships of the Anambas group, including the amphibious dock landing ship “Changbaishan” under the South China Sea Fleet of the Navy of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLAN), corrected their communication band simultaneously and moved rapidly to the accident maritime area, where they closely coordinated with 3 helicopters to search the "capsized ship" and the “crewmen fallen into water” and transfer the "injured crewmen" via helicopters for treatment.

MOSCOW, April 2 (RIA Novosti) - The 2014 Komodo multilateral naval exercises of 17 countries that are drawing to a close in Indonesian waters have been very useful to Russia, Mikhail Galuzin, the country's envoy to Indonesia told RIA Novosti on Wednesday.
"The exercise not only allowed Russia to practice cooperation with other participants but, just as important, contributed to a better mutual understanding between sailors from different countries," Galuzin said.
Russia brought the largest squadron of naval ships to the exercises, including the Marshal Shaposhnikov, Irkut tanker and Alatau service ship.
"This indicates Russia's particular interest in questions concerning the development of multilateral cooperation in the Pacific Rim, aimed at the promotion of security and stability in the region," Galuzin said.
Other participants in the joint exercises include Australia, Brunei, Vietnam, India, Cambodia, China, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, New Zealand, Singapore, Thailand, Philippines, South Korea and Japan.
The excercises part of Komodo 2014 simulate disaster-relief maneuvers. They mark the first time all major Asia-Pacific countries have gathered together in an effort to enhance cooperation. The exercise kicked off in Indonesia on March 28 and will last until April 3.
Ships from the 17 countries took part in search and rescue operations, practiced first aid measures and the evacuation of people from disaster areas.
The Komodo 2014 closing ceremony is due to take place on Natuna Island on Thursday.
